Competition Success for Creative Writers

Tony O'Dwyer 2 b

Tony O’Dwyer

When Tony O’Dwyer and Jonathan Hill entered work in the rethinkyourmind national competition they little thought it would take them to the House of Lords. Rethinkyourmind is an organisation that encourages people “to creatively express well-being” and each year competition winners’ work – twenty-six poems and twenty-four illustrations in all – is published in the Yellow Book.

Winners were invited to a cream tea at the House of Lords, hosted by Lord Patel of Bradford; actress Ruby Wax was also there. Tony submitted both a poem and a painting entitled “Allotments” that reflected his pleasure in escaping to his own somewhat untidy haven.

Jonathon Hill a

Jonathan Hill

Jonathan’s poem was called “Down the valley and back”.  It described his regular mood-enhancing walk along the banks of the Soar, between Barrow and Quorn, and the many things he might encounter on his way.

Tony and Jonathan are regular members of the Loughborough Branch Creative Writing class. Like many of Deb Tyler-Bennett’s students they find that writing plays a valuable role in coping with the stresses of daily life, and look forward to meeting with other class members on Friday mornings.
